The HS160 Casts a Big SHADOW, With Great Value!
October 27, 2017
I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this quadcopter. I love the sleek, stylish sport flyers, but the HS160 Shadow has found a place in my favorites. First off it is packaged incredibly well. The box is neat and well thought out, with easy start up instructions printed on the inside of the magnetic closing lid. The HS160 itself is well designed. It even comes with a velveteen sack to carry it in! The folding arms feel secure when folded in or extended, with firm clicks when in place. The battery design is excellent, and installs under the body completing the sleek underside. The LED lights front and rear are brilliant at night, white in front, and red in rear, helping with low light orientation.
The power button is on top of the body, and that is a plus in my opinion, not having to fiddle with plugging in a battery or lifting the flyer to power it up from the underside. There are 4 speeds on this beauty, which are very much pronounced in there level of responsiveness. I was actually amazed. The first speed is very docile, increasing with each step to a very sporty and quick responding top speed. Pitch and yaw rates on the Shadow are good for this type of drone. There is not a flip function, but this is not really necessary, as the HS160 is more intended for video. The app is easy to use. The wifi has a password which is printed on the side of the body. One button motor start and landing, and altitude hold make this a breeze for the beginner. The trim adjustment is very easy with each adjustment in one location. The controller is ergonomic and well thought out. The phone holder is very secure and I like that the angle adjustment has serrations that keep it firmly in place. Battery life is good, around 6 - 8 minutes depending on how hard you fly. This quad is light weight but will handle light breeze sufficiently. You can easily fly the HS160 indoors also - it is such a stable a flyer. Altitude hold is such a plus for indoor flying.
Overall, I really like this little fellow. It is fun, responsive, cute in an odd way, comes in a great package (with an extra battery!), and is supplied by a company with the best customer service I have ever experienced (I own 4 other HS quads). Holy Stone!
* I will add some video footage from the HS160's camera at a later date.
Give this cutie a try. Have fun! Fly safe!

First impressions...It's GREAT!
October 5, 2017
Well..I was going to wait a few more days before reviewing this drone, but I just had to give my first impressions...Its GREAT!! This makes my third Holy Stone drone (I also have the HS171 and the X300c), and while I'm still pretty new to this hobby I have learned some things. Of the three, this is the one you can easily fly in the house. Just in case, make sure you have some room with no breakable family heirlooms nearby!
On my first flight, I started it inside, flew it a bit and made some trim adjustments. Then I left it Hovering (altitude hold is amazing!) while I opened the front door and latched open the storm door. I picked up the transmitter again and flew it outside! The control is precise and responsive. Outside, the wind does affect it somewhat. I found that adjusting the speed button to a higher level made it aggressive enough to take on a steady breeze...but don't take chances if it is what you would call windy! Now even though this little guy can move right along, if you're looking for a stunt flier this ain't it.(Try the X300!) It won't do flips, and it probably won't get your heart pumping too fast. But if you want to check your gutters, or get a nice aerial photo of your house and neighborhood, and some fun videos of a family reunion, the HS160 is a good pick. Easy to learn, fun to fly,and a nice camera that will do stills and videos (you need to download an app to use the camera & FPV functions). All this and the best packaging I've ever seen! Oh, BTW, if you're wondering about customer support, Holy Stone is simply the best! I've never seen a company do more to make sure their customers are happy. The attached video is my second flight. It includes a crash about four minutes in when I made a newbie mistake and panicked. I picked it up and carried it back to to the deck rail for a restart. My favorite part was the landing on my car roof!

Great Value!
January 2, 2018
The Holy Stone HS160 Shadow FPV RC Drone with 720P HD Wi-Fi Camera is an excellent value, it is difficult to find a comparable product close to this price and quality. With the altitude hold, one key start, foldable arms, extra propellers and bonus battery, it is well worth the price.
Customer service is extremely responsive and caring even with the most basic questions. Would not hesitate to buy from them again and definitely recommend them!

Okay starter drone
January 1, 2018
Okay starter drone, very inexpensive, easy to use. However, build quality is terrible. Remote feels very cheap.
The batteries take a very long time to recharge, so be wary of that. Comes with a very thin USB charger cable to recharge the batteries. The remote requires 4 AA batteries. In this day and age, usually remotes are recharged through a USB port.

Poor response to controller and weak signal reception
January 1, 2018
Poor response to controller and weak signal reception. The earlier models must have been good, but this edition is just garbage. I tried flying this drone several times after connecting to it wirelessly. At first it worked seemlessly, after the second day the emotional high I had was gone and replace with frustration. The biggest issue is the poor connection between the drone and the user it takes several attempts to connect to it and once you do pray because you only get on chance. This drone is over prices, unuseable and just plane bad. I returned it after giving it the benefit of the doubt. ****JUNK****

This is a very compact and light drone. The picture on the camera is crystal clear. I was very surprised with with how loud this toy actually is. While trying to learn the controls and encountering a couple crash landings the camera fell out place. We unscrewed the shell and positioned it. Hopefully it stays put

I am a begginer and love this drone!! Everything about it works great except the app. After I get it set up and hooked up to the internet to video 'record the battery dies. 5 min flight time just doesn't do it. I am glad I got this one first to practice but already need one with a longer flight time.

Decent starter drone
November 27, 2017
I bought the HS Shadow as a starter drone. Overall I'm satisfied with my experience in learning how to fly a drone for the first time but the Shadow didn't really wow me. The two important things for me upon opening the box:
1. Ease of flying for the first time
2. Ease to take videos/pictures.
For ease of flying, I had mixed results. There are simple instructions inside the box which helped me understand everything that was involved.
However, there were a bunch of typos in the manual which put me off immediately. It shook my confidence that I had made the right purchase!
After getting through the boot-up steps (seems like a lot but actually fast) I pushed the take-off button. I expected the drone to fly into the air and hover in place but instead, it just spun the blades on the ground. My goal for the first flight was to simply have it fly up, hover, and fly back down. However, as soon as it took off it was drifting until it crashed. Maybe this is normal but I would have liked a heads up about this kind of behavior. It took me a few rounds inside our apartment before I got the hang of it. Now I feel comfortable flying it in front of me while I travel around hallways and the like.
For ease of video/camera, I've also had mixed results. The app that is provided is really bare bones. My android had trouble connecting but didn't have any issues with my wife's iPhone. The icons are tiny and I'm not sure if the camera/video button on the controller works. That being said, if you do have it connected, the image quality seems fine. Just don't forget to manually adjust the camera depending on what you are trying to achieve! I thought I cared about the camera but I mostly find myself flying around since hooking up to the wifi is a bit of a pain.
Other general thoughts. The controller and drone are made out of light plastic. At first, I thought it was cheap but seems to be resilient to my crashes. I waffle sometimes but overall I think the light construction is a good thing. I have a toddler and if it was heavier/bulkier I suspect he would have broken it by now. The folding arms definitely help in this regard too. However, I wonder if the light construction means that the drone is unstable in even a little bit of wind when I've been flying it outside. If it had a little more heft maybe this wouldn't be the case? Next, I feel like the timing for the "low battery" doesn't come soon enough. The lights will flash when the battery is low but I'll sense the drone losing altitude or drifting before that happens. Once the warning comes on you are definitely done.
Despite my concerns, I do enjoy playing with my HS Shadow and use it regularly. I'm glad I bought it as I wouldn't have known what to look for in my next drone purchase. It gets the job done of being a good value for the features and definitely works.

Hello Kristin,
Thanks for taking time in comment, we are so sorry for all inconvenience that has caused to you. We aim at providing best quality and after-sale service, sincerely apologize for your unhappy shopping experience.
Please note that if the drone flies unstably, we suggest the players calibrate the Gyro after pairing the drone each time.
1.Place the drone on a flat level surface.
2.Quickly push throttle stick up and down to pair the drone to the transmitter as usual.
3.Long press the calibrating button until the LED lights of the drone starts flashing and then turns solid.
4.The gyro should be now reset.
Do not calibrate the Gyro when flying the drone; otherwise it will LOSE control or fall down to the ground directly.
And because drone is lightweight, we do recommend you to fly the drone in a good weather, otherwise , rainy, snowy or windy day might cause the drone lost the control. You can also take photos and videos by controller and check your files on the SD card through card reader.
Here are some notes, please pay attention to.
1.The drone should be put on a flat, lever surface when pairing the drone. Otherwise, the gyro won't be in balance and the drone may lose control. Please re-calibrate your drone before each flight.
2.The drone have different speed modes, and if you are new to a drone, please use the slower one, so you can take it under your control. After a learning curve and taking more practice, then try the fast speed mode.
3.When using the headless mode, make sure you remember your original position and the direction of the drone so that you can control it back successfully when you are going to lose it.
We really understand you and will you please give us a chance to serve you? We have written to you with our solutions, could you please check it at your convenience time? If you have any questions about our products, please reach us at usa@holystone.com, or call us:1 855-888-6699.
Don’t worry, we are here and willing to do all our possibilities to help you out!
Thank you so much!
